Information message on the results of JSC “NAC “Kazatomprom” delegation visit to the Kingdom of Belgium on October 25-26, 2010
28.10.2010During the official visit of N.A. Nazarbayev, the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, to the Kingdom of Belgium on October 25-26, 2010, Vladimir Shkolnik, the Chairman of the Board, JSC “NAC “Kazatomprom”, held a number of meetings with leading European companies and representatives of scientific community as well.
The agenda of the meetings included issues related to cooperation and implementation of joint projects in the field of uranium industry and other related areas of uranium-mining complex, as well as development and strengthening of scientific and engineering interactions.
On October 25, 2010, during the signing ceremony of bilateral documents, attended by N.A. Nazarbayev, the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and Yves Leterme, the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Belgium, a Memorandum of Understanding between JSC “NAC “Kazatomprom”, the National Nuclear Centre of Kazakhstan (NNC) and the Belgian Nuclear Research Centre (SCK CEN) was signed. Taking into consideration mutual interest of the Parties in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy and technology, the Parties expressed their intention to strengthen cooperation in the following areas:
· Radioactive waste management;
· Experience in start-up, operation and decommissioning of BN-350 fast breeding reactor;
· Establishment of bilateral and multilateral scientific and educational centers as a new instrument of international cooperation;
· Staff training;
· Exchange of scientists and organization of joint scientific activities.
Besides, on October 26, 2010 Vladimir Shkolnik took part in the meeting "The platform for Kazakhstan-European partnership" held under the chairmanship of Erbol Orynbayev, Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan and Hugues Mingarelli, Deputy Director-General for External Relations at the European Commission, within the framework of which the report on cooperation of Kazatomprom with the European partners was presented.
On October 26, 2010 Vladimir Shkolnik also took part in the presentation of the Platform for Kazakhstan-European partnership "Investments in innovations and new technologies" with the participation of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, and the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso. During the presentation Vladimir Shkolnik made a report on cooperation of Kazatomprom with the European companies. In particular, Vladimir Shkolnik said that Kazatomprom currently actively strengthens its cooperation with the leading European companies and organizations not just in the uranium field but in other segments of nuclear fuel cycle, as well as in the field of scientific and technological cooperation. Among the European companies there are a great number of consumers of high quality beryllium, tantalum and niobium products manufactured by one of Kazatomprom’s key enterprise – JSC “Ulba Metallurgical Plant”.
KAZATOMPROM is a national operator of the Republic of Kazakhstan for import and export of uranium and its compounds, rare metals, nuclear fuel for nuclear power plants, special equipment, technologies and dual-use materials. The Company’s main activities include geological exploration, uranium production, output of nuclear fuel cycle products, construction of reactors and nuclear power plants, non-ferrous metallurgy and production of construction materials, power industry, science, social welfare and personnel training. At present, over 26,000 people are employed by the Company. Kazatomprom is one of the top uranium world producers.
