Press Release on Summarizing the Results of Activity of Kazatomprom in 2006 in the Field of Labor & Environment Protection

The National Atomic Company “Kazatomprom” has summarized the results of work in 2006 in the field of labor and environment protection and provision of nuclear and radiation safety.

As it was informed earlier, during the period of April 10-12 there was a seminary meeting in LLP “MAEK-Aktau” (Aktau).  Officials and specialists of all structural divisions, joint ventures and affiliates of “Kazatomprom”, representatives of the territorial regional department of environment protection and GU “Mezhoblgosatominspection” of the Ministry of the Republic of Kazakhstan have participated in the work of the seminary meeting. The results of Company’s activities in the field of labor and environment protection, provision of nuclear and radiation safety had been summed up upon completion of this event and the tasks for the year 2007 were determined for these directions.

It was remarked that the Plan of strategic development of  “Kazatomprom” in 2006-2015 was aimed to implement the constitutional right of each citizen for the conditions of labor that correspond to the safety requirements.

Complying with the plans of “Kazatomprom” for 2006 the dependent enterprises had taken the measures for protection of environment in coordination with the territorial departments of the Ministry of Environment Protection. All enterprises of the Company have timely registered permits for nature management and performed work on development and correction of normatives for quality of environment.   Positive estimates on nature-protective activity of the Company were given by the regional territorial departments on environment protection.  In particular, it was remarked that the enterprises of  “Kazatomprom” systematically provide observance and performance of the ecological requirements and legal norms provided for by the ecological legislation of the Republic and also that the ecological policy is paid an important role in administrative management of the Company. 

Within 2006 Kazatomprom performed work on technical provision of production safety and the total cost amounted to over 1,5 billion tenge, which is by 14% more than in 2005. Nonetheless, according to the specialists’ estimates there were cases of production traumatism.  The reasons for that were violations of elementary rules of equipment use and requirements of labor discipline. 

Presently, all enterprises of Kazatomprom have developed and implemented the most modern management systems of labor and environment protection, directed to the achievement of the level of nuclear, radiation, ecological safety and other safety components recognized in global practice.  Also the new ecologically safe technologies are being developed in the field of nuclear energy use.  According to their positions they are practically equal to the international standards. 

During the seminary it was remarked that all enterprises of the Company comply with the requirements of the law of RK “On radiation safety of population” and the acting Norms of radiation safety as well as the guarantees in the field of nuclear safety provision.  More than 90% of personnel of the Company in 2006 received radiation doses of less than 25% of the maximum allowed dose limit.
