Press Release: JV Inkai Certification

On April 4, 2006 Canadian Cameco Corporation company announced that JV ‘’Inkai’’, developing a uranium deposit of the same name in Kazakhstan, had passed a certification according to the standards of BSI OHSAS:18001 and ISO 14001:2004, internationally recognized standards of labor protection, safety measures and preservation of environment.

“Inkai” has become the first project in “Cameco” family to have passed OHSAS 18001 standard certification, also the first one to have been certified according to more than one system.

“The certification has demonstrated the Cameco Corporation’s aspiration for supporting high standards of protecting employees and environment while accomplishing its projects in Central Asia and Kazakhstan”, - commented Mr.S.Breus, General Manager of  JV Inkai, “this achievement reflects our employees’ standing efforts of meeting the requirements of both standards, and it is going to help us in building a lasting alliance between JV Inkai and our numerous partners”.

By introducing the ISO 14001:2004- an international standard on a voluntary basis, the company demonstrates its commitment to realizing a sufficient management of environment preservation by means of fulfilling relevant requirements, preventing pollution and persistent improvement of ecology control system.

BSI OHSAS 18001 is a specification developed by the British Standardization Institute (BSI) and is intended for assisting companies in managing project risks related to problems in protecting employees’ and population’s health and safety. The key elements of the specification are: identification of hazard factors, risk estimation and control, meeting the requirements and continuous improvement.

BSI OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001:2004 form a single system that helps organizations in their aims of labor protection, ensuring environmental safety. The system provides for annual independent audit and recurring certification every three years. JV “Inkai” obtained the certificates after the subsidiary of Moody International company audited its activities and productive capacity. The certifying organization is United Kingdom Accreditation Service.

“The fact of obtaining these certificates sets a correct direction for different activities related to labor and environment protection at the early stage of “Inkai” project ”, - said Wayne Anderson, manager of the joint venture responsible for the labor protection, industrial and environmental safety. “We use effective rules and procedures for the people’s and environment’s protection, that will be useful during coming decades”, - stressed Mr. Anderson.

 JV Inkai is involved in development of a deposit in Southern region of Kazakhstan using In-Situ leaching method, which is the most ecologically safe method of deposit processing today. The founders are: Cameco corporation: 60%, NAC Kazatomprom – 40%. JV “Inkai” has a license for uranium extraction on Inkai deposit’s Site#1, also it has a license for a geological survey with a following output on Sites #2 and #3. Demonstrated reserves of the Site #1 are approved by Kazakhstan’s State Committee for Reserves and amounted in 42849 tons U (mineable reserves on the Site#1 are 35192 tons U). The overall amount of reserves and resources on Sites #2 and #3 is at least 200000 tons U. These reserves and resources need to be approved by State Committee for Reserves.
