Press Release: Success Completion of Works on Draining of Primary Circuit Sodium of BN 350 Reactor

On December 01, 2003, at 7-40 a.m. of local time (9-40 time of Almaty) the works on draining of primary circuit sodium of fast reactor BN 350 RF in Aktau (Mangistau oblast) were successfully completed.

This unique work was conducted in accordance with the Plan of first-priority actions on conditioning of BN 350 reactor to nuclear safe mode, after the Government has taken a decree on reactor final shutdown.

All works for necessary equipment design and, in fact, draining project were implemented by Kazakhstan specialists. So, the most important second stage of BN 350 reactor decommissioning after spent nuclear fuel packaging process in 2001 is successfully completed.

BN 350 Aktau reactor is the first fast reactor in the world. At present, it is a part of 'MAEC-Kazatomprom' enterprise, which, in turn, is a part of National Atomic Company 'Kazatomprom'.
