11.11.2009Almaty
Total uranium production in the Republic of Kazakhstan for the 9 months of 2009 amounted to 9,535 tU. Thus, the target was exceeded by 3%. The increase, as compared to the corresponding period of 2008, made up 61%, while a gain of U3O8 output in comparison with the corresponding period of 2008 was 50%.
In spite of the negative influence of the global financial crisis on commodity and raw material markets, production figures for the core products at the Ulba Metallurgical Plant JSC correspond to the target plan. Thus, for the 9 months of 2009, the output of tantalum and niobium products made up 105% of the plan. NAC Kazatomprom is still the main world supplier of beryllium products. The UMP covers the third of the world requirements in beryllium products, with 91% of the beryllium 2009 plan realized.
Over the nine months of 2009, MAEC-Kazatomprom LLP, NAC Kazatomprom’s subsidiary producing power and water for the consumers of Aktau city and Mangistau region, generated 3 billion kW of electric power, 1.95 million GCal of heat power and 724 million m3 of water (drinking, process, hot, sea and distillated).
For the reporting period, this industry sector received investments of KZT 52.9 billion that approximately the same as in the corresponding period of 2008 (KZT 59 billion).
Two sulfuric acid plants are currently under construction: one - in Zhanakorgan district, Kyzylorda region (capacity is 500,000 tons per year, project cost is US$ 216 million, operation to be started in 2011, with design capacity to be reached in 2012), and the other - in Stepnogorsk (capacity is 180,000 tons per year, project cost is KZT 8.8 billion, operation to be started in 2010). Over the nine months of 2009 design and estimate documentation was developed and external infrastructure facilities of the plant in Zhanakorgan district, access motorways and railways, power transmission lines were constructed.
The priority task of Kazatomprom is building-up a vertically integrated company including all stages of the nuclear fuel cycle to turn out high value added product. In the context of this task, in October 2009, Anne Lauvergeon, AREVA CEO, and Vladimir Shkolnik, Kazatomprom President, executed an agreement for establishment of a nuclear JV - IFASTAR. This JV is to perform two feasibility studies, namely:
- Evaluation of the target Asian market to sell integrated fuel packages (including all segments of the nuclear fuel cycle) to utilities operating in Asia;
- Feasibility study of construction (including engineering) of a fuel assembly line at the Ulba Metallurgical Plant (400 t U a year).
The nine-month consolidated income of NAC Kazatomprom amounted to KZT 29 billion, with the target exceeded by 27% and an increase of 55% compared with the same period of 2008. At the 2009 year end, the net profit of KZT 49 billion is expected.
