18.05.2011
Today, on May 18, 2011, KATCO, the Kazakh-French Joint Venture, celebrates its 10 000 tU production in Suzak region of South-Kazakhstan oblast.

10 000th t U production capacity was achieved almost 10 years after the startup of Kazatomprom and AREVA pilot project – the processing plant - in Kazakhstan.

The celebration ceremony is attended by representatives of oblast and district administrations, shareholders’ senior officers, AREVA and KazAtomProm.

This notable event is the result of partners' support and outstanding job of all KATCO’s team first in the exploration and development and now in the exploitation of the deposits.

«KATCO’s mining sites are one of the best in the uranium industry thanks to efficient infrastructure, highly qualified staff and high level of standards in the field of operations and safety,” says Konrad Schauer, KATCO the Director General.

VladimirShkolnik, theChairmanofKazatomprom, saysinitscongratulatory speech“that KATCO is one of the largest mining enterprises of the Southern Kazakhstan oblast where more than one thousand employees work at its facilities. A result of the successful Kazakhstani-French cooperation is a high quality of products and yearly production increase».

KATCO, a joint Kazakh-French Venture was created in 1996 to conduct the operations for uranium development and mining at the Moyunkum and Tortkuduk uranium deposits in the southern Kazakhstan, approximately 250 kilometers north of Shymkent. Today, the company employs 1170 persons and runs the mines equipped with modern equipment to use In Situ Leaching (ISL) technique with yearly capacity of more than 3100 tU and total reserves of 65000 tU.
Now, considering the size of the deposits, the prospects for discovering ore in new areas under existing license to the company, the recent 35-year extension of KATCO’s underground mining concession, and the fact that KATCO produced 3354 metric tons of uranium in 2010, the aim is to increase production to 4000 metric tons from 2012.
