Kyzylorda

 

 

Today, February 5, 2010, saw signing of a Memorandum on Cooperation on social and economic development of Kazakhstan’s Kyzylorda region in 2010 between local governing body and Kazatomprom national atomic company. The document was signed by Mr. Bolatbek Kuandykov, governor of the region, and Mr. Vladimir Shkolnik, Kazatomprom CEO.  

 

This Memorandum provides for further social and economic development of the region and improvement of the community welfare. As part of this arrangement, Kazatomprom will be implementing the projects as following:

 

·        Construction of a maternity hospital in Kyzylorda city, KZT 909.800 million were assigned in 2010;

·        Construction of a boarding school for handicapped children (v. Shieli) worth of KZT 499. 448 million;

·        Provision of urban amenities in Kok-Shoky housing complex (v. Shieli) worth of KZT 16. 800 million.

 

In this way, Kazatomprom continues to implement its large-scale social program in uranium mining regions. By now, Kazatomprom has invested over KZT 4 billion in development of the social sphere. Among the projects implemented:  

 

·        repair of motorway sections in Zhanakorgan district and motorways in Zhanakorgan village (KZT 225.157 million);

·         provision of Zhanakorgan district’s schools with furniture and equipment; holding activities for education improvement (KZT 19. 484 million);

·         top overhaul of motorways in v. Shieli (KZT 70 million);

·        provision of urban amenities in v. Shieli (KZT 145. 334 million);

·        upgrading and providing equipment to School №127 in v. Shieli (KZT 530.375 million);

·        overhaul of Kyzylorda regional Music and Drama Theatre named after N. Bekezhanov (KZT 196.145), and other.

 

As part of Kazatomprom’s own social program, a number of social outlets have been put into operation in Shieli after reconstruction. Those include a medical unit with a day-and-night clinic for 30 patients; a 280-seat kindergarten; Arman recreation center (various hobby groups are attended by about 300 children); a sports complex, a sports and recreation center etc. All the facilities are on balance of specialized company Kazatomprom-Demeu. Opening of Kazatomprom-Demeu’s local branch led to creation of 264 jobs, additional 103 jobs were created within the SME projects (tailor’s workshop and beauty salon).

By signing this Memorandum, Kazatomprom reaffirmed its commitment to socially responsible business. The company fully implements its obligations in the social sphere.

 

Kazatomprom-Demeu LLP was established in 2004. As Kazatomprom subsidiary, Demeu implements and operates social facilities. The main source of financing is an authorized fund established by Kazatomprom and its foreign partners. Kazatomprom-Demeu objective is to improve welfare and life quality of Kazakh citizens. In 2008 the company was named as The Best Social Project of the Year in the first national contest on social responsibility.

 

Kazatomprom is the national operator of the Republic of Kazakhstan for export of uranium and its compounds, rare metals, nuclear fuel for nuclear power plants, special purpose equipment, technologies and double-use materials. The main activities of the company are: geological exploration, uranium production, manufacture of nuclear fuel cycle products, reactor construction, nuclear power plants, production of construction materials, the electric energy sector, scientific support of production and social welfare and training of personnel. Today Kazatomprom has more than 26,000 employees and is amongst the leading uranium production companies in the world.
