Kazatomprom attains a leading position in uranium mining
By the end of 2008 the Republic of Kazakhstan had produced 8,521 tons of uranium, compared with 6,637 tons of uranium in 2007. The growth relative to the previous year amouned to 28,5%.
On January 6 - at the contest «Сhoice of the year in Kazakhstan - 2008 “National Atomic Company “Kazatomprom” was recognized as best in the “High dynamics of development and technological progress” nomination.
On January 24 - JSC “ NAC “Kazatomprom” and Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) signed the Memorandum of Understanding. This document reflects the interests of two companies to jointly cooperate in a wide range of issues, including mining and supply of natural uranium, supplies of Kazakhstan’s uranium products in the form of fuel pellets and assemblies for the industry of Indian nuclear energy, and personnel training.
On April 4, 2009 - in the section of Khorasan-1 deposit, northern Khorasan, the first mine in Kazakhstan with a capacity of 3,000 tonnes of uranium a year was introduced into operation. LLP Kyzylkum is responsible forall the works on the cite, members of which include joint-stock company "Kazatomprom", a consortium of Japanese energy companies (Toshiba Corporation, TEPCO, Chubu Electric, Tohoku Electric, KyushuElectric and Marubeni Corporation) and also Canadian Uranium One. The products are primarily designed to meet the needs of nuclear energy sector of Japan.

On April 25, 2009 not far from the building of Almaty akimat, a solemn opening ceremony of the Mall of Sakura was held. 9 varieties of sakura (416 seedlings) from the island of Hokkaido, were donated to the people of Kazakhstan by Toshiba as a symbol of friendship between Japan and the Republic of Kazakhstan as well as deep respect to strategic partner - the National Atomic Company Kazatomprom.
On April 28, 2009 in the Shiely district of Kyzylorda region a new underground leaching mine “Irkol” with production capacity of 750 tons of uranium a year was opened. This was the first mine, introduced into industrial operation within the framework of Kazakh-Chinese cooperation in the field of nuclear energy. Operation of the mine was organized as a joint venture LLP “Semizbay-U”.

On April 29, 2009, in Almaty, JSC National Atomic Company Kazatomprom and China Guangdong Nuclear Power Corporation (CGNPC) signed a Memorandum agreeing to a joint venture to build nuclear power plants in China.
On August 31- in the Zhanakorgan district of Kyzylorda region, a capsule was laid in the foundation of a new sulfuric acid plant. The project was implemented with the participation of foreign investors - Marubeni Corp., TEPCO (Japan), Uranium One (Canada).
On October 6, 2009 - AREVA and JSC “ NAC “Kazatomprom” signed an agreement to establish a joint fuel enterprise IFASTAR (Integrated Fuel Asia Star) headquartered in Paris with 51% and 49% shares respectively.

On October 6, 2009 - AREVA and JSC “ NAC “Kazatomprom” signed an agreement to establish a joint fuel enterprise IFASTAR (Integrated Fuel Asia Star) headquartered in Paris with 51% and 49% shares respectively.
The main purpose of IFASTAR is to conduct a feasibility study of the fuel production line (400 tU / year) construction (including design) at the Ulba Metallurgical Plant in Ust-Kamenogorsk and assessment of the targeted Asian market with regard to the implementation of integrated fuel package (including all segments of the pre-reactive fuel cycle and combining the uranium resources of JSC “ NAC “Kazatomprom” and fuel technologies of AREVA) operating in Asia by electricity companies.
On October 22, 2009 - JSC “ NAC “Kazatomprom”, Toshiba Corp. and Sumitomo Corp. signed a series of documents aimed to create joint ventures on the territory of Kazakhstan's of rare and rare earth metals and products based on them:
• «Letter of Intent on Cooperation in the field of rare metals with Toshiba Corporation;
• «Memorandum of Understanding on mutual cooperation on the project of development of rare earth metals in the Republic of Kazakhstan" with Sumitomo Corporation;
• «The agreement on the basic regulations of joint operation to develop a feasibility study of rare earth metals production» with Sumitomo Corporation.
On October 27, 2009 specialized company “Kazatomprom-Demeu” won the annual National Charity Award “Altyn jurek” in the category “Organization of the Year”.

October 30, 2009 - JSC “ NAC “Kazatomprom” and akimat of East Kazakhstan region signed a Memorandum on mutual cooperation in a social sphere. According to the document, a modern kindergarten will be built in the administrative center of the region with the support provided by JSC “ NAC “Kazatomprom”, plus this region will get a renovated children's health camp “Matrosovo”.

December 30, 2009 - The Republic of Kazakhstan came in first place in the world for uranium mining. December 21, 2009 annual plan was executed. Production of natural uranium was totaled to 13,500 tons.
