Akbastau

The Russian-Kazakhstan uranium mining Joint Venture Akbastau was established on October 12, 2006 for exploration of Blocks №1, 3 and 4 of the Budenovskoye uranium deposit in the Sozak region, South-Kazakhstan. 

Uranium mining at the  Budenovskoye deposit is scheduled to start in 2009.

The designed capacity of 3,000 tonnes  per annum is planned to be reached by 2015.
 

The main activity of Akbastau JV involves:

  • geological exploration;
  • design and construction of capacities for production and reprocessing of uranium-bearing ore and associated mineral resources     and the use of such capacities;
  • mining and reprocessing of uranium;
  • sale of production produced by the enterprise both within and outside the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Under contract terms, within the period of exploration, Akbastau JV is to transfer, annually, to the budget at least USD 110,000 for the social needs of the region and during the period of mining at least USD 500,000 annually upon agreement with local executive bodies.
