Kazakhstan exported a batch of nuclear fuel to a Chinese nuclear power plant

National Atomic Company Kazatomprom JSC announces the successful delivery batch of fuel assemblies (FAs) manufactured at the joint Kazakh-Chinese plant Ulba-FA LLP to China.

The heads of Samruk-Kazyna JSC, NAC Kazatomprom JSC, Ulba-FA LLP, China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN) and CGNPC Uranium Resources Company Limited (CGNPC-URC) took part in the solemn ceremony of acceptance of nuclear fuel for the Yangjiang NPP.

"This project is proof that our countries can and are already realising high-tech production. I would like to highlight the personal contribution of the management of both CGN Group and Kazatomprom, UMP and Ulba-FA, thanks to which our teams managed to fulfil production plans and objectives," said Nurlan Zhakupov, CEO of Samruk-Kazyna JSC, at the ceremony.

The plant delivered batch of FAs containing more than 30 tons of low-enriched uranium. The Yangjiang Nuclear Power Plant, located in Guangdong Province in southern China, has six power units with CPR-1000 and ACPR-1000 (PWR) reactors with a capacity of 1,000 MW.

"CGN Group has been our reliable strategic partner for many years. We have implemented a number of successful projects for uranium mining, production of fuel pellets and fuel assemblies. I am sure that thanks to the established joint work, all areas of our cooperation will continue to be successfully implemented," said Meirzhan Yussupov, CEO of NAC Kazatomprom JSC

Since the launch of Ulba-FA LLP, it continues to increase volumes to reach full production capacity - 200 tons of uranium in the form of FAs.

The Ulba-FA plant has a guaranteed sales market for 20 years ahead. The launch of innovative production allowed Kazakhstan to enter a limited circle of states-producers and suppliers of nuclear fuel for nuclear power plants.

As part of the working visit, the Kazakh delegation held meetings with Chinese partners. The parties drew attention to the existing high potential of bilateral cooperation, discussed issues of strengthening business ties and further development of mutually beneficial relations between Kazakhstan and China in the nuclear industry.
