Minister of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nurlan Nogayev visited JV KATCO LLP - an enterprise which is engaged in uranium mining in the Suzak district of the Turkestan region, the press service of the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan reports.

Kazakh-French Joint Venture KATCO Limited Liability Partnership was founded in 1996. The company carries out uranium production in the northern part of site No.1 (Southern), exploration and production of uranium on site No.2 (Tortkuduk) of the Moinkum deposit, located in the Suzak district of the Turkestan region.

In situ recovery (ISR) method of uranium mining was first used in the 1960s and accounted for 50% of world uranium production in 2017, 100% of uranium is mined by ISR method by KATCO.

In comparison with traditional methods, the ISR method provides a lower production cost, has a lower negative impact on the environment and provides high HSE performances.

In case of ISR, mining is carried out without uranium extraction to the surface. Injection wells are constructed on the deposit, through which the leaching solution is brought into the ore bodies. Passing through the ore-bearing horizon, it dissolves natural uranium compounds, and then this uranium-containing solution is brought to the surface through extraction wells.

Uranium is mined in the Republic of Kazakhstan by NAC Kazatomprom JSC. The company, together with its subsidiaries, associates and joint ventures, is developing 24 deposits, united into 13 uranium-mining enterprises.

The Minister got acquainted with the production cycle of the enterprise, held a meeting with the staff and discussed with the responsible persons the further development of uranium mining enterprises, the impact of the pandemic on the industry, as well as the preventive measures aimed at preventing the spread of COVID-19 at production sites.

According to the results of the first half of 2020, 10,434 tons of uranium were mined in Kazakhstan, 1,554 tons were produced by JV KATCO LLP.
