The current Nuclear Security Summit held since 2010 by initiative of the US President gathered in the American capital the leaders of the states and governments from more than 50 countries of the world including heads of the international institutions. The President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev participated in the Summit as well.

The world leaders discussed the issues of strengthening of nuclear security, storage of radioactive materials and their utilization and other topical issues in this sphere.

Within the framework of the Summit, the US Institute of Nuclear Energy highly appraised the contribution of the country in non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and strengthening of global nuclear security and awarded the Republic of Kazakhstan for placement of the International Bank of Nuclear Fuel.

In the Exhibition EXPO NIS-2016 taken place within the framework of the Summit Kazatomprom presented its internal system of natural uranium accounting, control and physical protection at its own uranium mining and processing facilities that allows continuous control of natural uranium turnover at all stages of its handling: from the moment of mining till sale of the end product.

It should be noted, that as of today the similar system is implemented only in Kazakhstan. Considering the existing experience, Kazatomprom under the joint programs with IAEA and the US Department of Energy, is involved in the development of natural uranium accounting and control model and system of its physical protection to be used in the uranium mining and processing facilities, as well as IAEA international recommendations on natural uranium accounting, control and physical protection for all countries dealing with uranium mining, especially for new countries which are beginners in the uranium market.

Let’s remind that in August 27, 2015, the Agreement between the Republic of Kazakhstan and IAEA for establishment of the Bank of Low-Enriched Uranium has been signed. This Project is aimed at the development of peaceful nuclear power and strengthening of non-proliferation regime. The main task of the project is a guaranteed supply of nuclear fuel to the IAEA member states.
