XI International Conference "Development of the uranium and rare metal industry": Joint efforts towards a sustainable future for the nuclear industry

16 May
XI International Conference

NAC Kazatomprom JSC informs that the opening of the XI International Conference "Development of the uranium and rare metal industry" dedicated to the 75th anniversary of Ulba Metallurgical Plant JSC took place today in Almaty on the basis of the Kazakh-British Technical University.

The conference will be held until 18 May 2024, and it has already gathered about 1,000 participants on the first day, including leading experts in the nuclear industry from around the world, to discuss topical issues and challenges for the development of the uranium and rare metal industry.

Sayasat Nurbek, minister of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan opened the conference. In his speech, he said that the ministry is working to create a "bridge" between large industrial companies and science. To do this, the Ministry is developing amendments to some legislation in order to create conditions for scientists and attract the attention of business.

"In addition to uranium mining enterprises, Kazatomprom has the Ulba Metallurgical Plant in its assets – this is a unique enterprise and the only manufacturer of tantalum, niobium and beryllium products in the CIS. The plant is actively working on the creation of unique products – beryllium-based intermetallics, which have great potential for use in nuclear and thermonuclear energy, instrumentation, aerospace and other industries. At the 31st International Symposium on thermonuclear fusion technology, this development of UMP’s technologists and scientists took 2nd place.

UMP’s technologists and scientists have faced challenges more than once. They have always adequately responded to these challenges, and this challenge to create space–age material was adequately accepted by them," said Kuanysh Omarbekov, Chief Operations Officer of Kazatomprom, in his speech.

The XI International Conference "Development of the Uranium and Rare Metal Industry" is one of the most important events in the nuclear industry. The conference has been held since 2000 and during this time has established itself as an established platform for the exchange of experience and advanced developments in the field of mining, processing and use of uranium and rare earth metals.

"We are working on the development of programs and research projects aimed at sustainable use of resources and solving environmental problems. Also, in order to reduce emissions, we are introducing innovative technologies and methods aimed at making responsible decisions on environmental impact. KBTU participates in international research and educational projects aimed at solving global problems. We are convinced that only joint efforts and collective commitment can lead to real change. Dialogue is important today for working together to develop effective strategies for managing natural resources." – commented Maratbek Gabdullin, Rector of the Kazakh-British Technical University.

In general, this conference allows us to identify the most modern and innovative methods in the field of forecasting, exploration and development of the mineral resource base, technology for mining uranium and rare metals, obtaining uranium products, production safety, as well as environmental protection.

A wide range of topics will be considered in seven sections as part of the Conference from 16 to 18 May:

• Geology, geotechnology and mining and development;

• Technology of uranium mining and processing;

• Technologies and current problems of the pre-reactor nuclear fuel cycle;

• Resources and efficient technologies for the production of rare, rare earth metals and high-tech products based on them;

• Safe operation of nuclear industry enterprises and man-made waste management, industrial safety management;

• Issues of sustainable development, including ecology, social sphere and corporate governance (ESG), legal, macroeconomic and educational aspects of the nuclear industry;

• Digitalization, automation and robotization in the nuclear industry.
